Smudging sage is a ritual that is done to remove bad energy and bring a feeling of peace and clarity to yourself and the space around you. Although you can have a smudging ceremony at any time, it is most commonly done when moving to a new space, to mark a positive change in your life, or when there has been a psychic disturbance.
To begin your smudging ritual, light your sage over a dish and blow out the flame so there is a light burn and a lot of smoke. You may have to relight your sage at some point, so keep a flame nearby.
To cleanse yourself, start from your feet and slowly raise the sage up to your head, then back down again. You can pray if you'd like, or speak your intentions out loud as you go through your smudging ceremony. As you smudge you can use your hand or a feather to fan the smoke onto yourself and throughout your space.
The doorways into rooms and the windows leading to the outside are very important to focus on, so make sure to linger for a moment at your doorway with the intention of driving negative energy out of your room, through the window.
When you are finished with your smudging ceremony you can either let the sage burn out naturally by placing it on your dish, or estinguish it manually. Make sure to bury the ashes to signify the finality of the negative erergies that lived in your space.
