Tobacco, Bourbon & OUD Wood make up the scent of
Papa Legba - the guardian of the crossroads first Loa you serve during a Voodoo ceremony, he grants you permission to communicate with the other Loa.
Standing at a crossroads as dusk sets in you notice an old man with a cane coming towards you…he limps not because he is crippled but because his feet are in different worlds - our earth and the spirit world. He stares at you from under the brim of his straw hat, smoke swirling in the air from his pipe, waiting to hear the reason why you came to see him. Once you've gone to meet Papa Legba, you will never be the same again.
What Papa Legba Can Do For You:
To speak with any other Loa you must explain your problem to Papa Legba, and ask him to remove the obstacles that are keeping you from your goals. You can speak to Papa Legba solely without connecting to other Loa, he will help open the doors to new opportunities. He is also known for giving you the skills that allow you to triumph at your trade (check out the blues musician who sold his soul for immense talent at the crossroads - Robert Johnson). If you feel like you're spinning your wheels and unable to get where you really want to be, Legba can help you out of your rut. He also brings you good fortune, while sending bad energy away from you. If you have lost or misplaced something, ask Papa Legba to help you find it.
Offerings:
Papa Legba would love tobacco for his pipe and rum or coffee to warm his old bones. For food, he likes corn sprinkled with cayenne pepper and candy of any kind. He’ll also happily accept spare change.
Remember - Papa Legba will not let you communicate to the other Loa (saints) until you've provided him with appropriate offerings and respect.
Decorate Your Altar:
Draw out Papa Legbas’ vévé (symbol) and place it on top of his altar or hang above it. You can use a statue or image of St. Peter or St. Lazarus to represent Legba. Decorate the altar with a red scarf, red candles, and red and white items. Leave the offerings for him on top of his altar.
